This Saturday, local author James Hewlett will host a special football-themed family morning at Jersey Library, designed to celebrate the rise of women’s sport and inspire the next generation of players and fans.
The event will feature an exclusive reading from Hewlett’s latest novel, Izzy Harvey: Rise of the Falcons. The story follows Izzy, a determined young footballer who grows up in the shadow of her brother Jack – a rising star in the game. Fighting to prove her own worth, Izzy and her team take part in a national inter-schools cup competition, showcasing resilience, teamwork, and the determination to be recognised in a male-dominated sport.
Alongside the reading, families and young Islanders are encouraged to wear their favourite football shirts and take part in fun activities, including a football quiz and a “design your own kit” challenge. Hewlett, also known for his Jack Harvey series, explained that the new book is about giving young girls the same kind of thrilling, high-stakes sports stories boys have enjoyed for years.
“For all the progress in women’s football, something crucial is still missing – stories,” Hewlett said. “Girls aged eight to 14 rarely see themselves reflected in the books they read about sport. These are the formative years where belief is either built or broken. I want to help change that.”
He added: “I firmly believe sport is for everyone. There should be no barriers – cultural, social, or structural – preventing anyone from enjoying a game loved by millions worldwide.”
The family event takes place from 11am to 1pm on Saturday at Jersey Library and is free to attend. It aims not only to entertain but also to spark conversation around gender equality in sport, giving girls the visibility and role models they deserve.
Added Insight
Hewlett’s initiative comes at a time when women’s football is experiencing unprecedented growth. From the record-breaking crowds at the Women’s World Cup to grassroots initiatives across the UK, visibility and representation are becoming increasingly vital. Events like this one not only encourage reading but also strengthen community spirit and help empower young girls to dream big on and off the pitch.
